A Child of the 90s, Reading Aptitude Tests and Mass Market Paperbacks

Most people grow up on stories and for me especially, they were my bread and butter. I adored watching the monster movies of the 90s with my grandfather. My guilty pleasure was listening to the “grown folks” business of my mother and aunties while I read about werewolves and vampires in the corner. And the first book series I fell in love with was an epic tale about cats steeped in magical realism.
When you love stories, you begin making your own. And I wrote throughout high school and college – mostly short stories and poems. Still, I never toyed with the idea of writing a full-length novel. Until one day, during a paranormal romance binge, I struggled to find a story with a black female protagonist.
This just so happened to coincide with my job temporarily shutting down. And so, I began writing and foolishly thought that I would be done with my silly little project in a year or so. To surprise of none, I’m sure, it took much longer. However, in the long and, at many times, tedious process, I reconnected with my love of writing and reading in a way that I haven’t had in my years.
The Desert Ties Universe is my love letter to family, urban fantasy and the stories that shape and bind us.
